Why your driver license needs a “Translator” before you hit the autostrada in Italy
The dream of driving through Italy is a cinematic one: a vintage Spider, a winding road along Lake Como, and the scent of jasmine in the air. But as many travelers find out—often while being pulled over by a polite but firm Carabiniere, Italian police —the Italian “Sweet Life” comes with its fair share of bitter bureaucracy.
If you hold a non-EU driver license (from the UK, USA, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Israel, South Africa, etc.), there is one document that is just as important as your passport: an Italian sworn translation of your driver license legalized in an Italian courthouse by a Italian Ministry of Justice vetted, approved and registered legal translator.
The legal reality: Beyond the car rental desk
Many travelers make the mistake of thinking that because the rental agency handed over the keys, they are legally “good to go.” In reality, rental agencies are businesses; the police are the law.
Under Article 135 of the Italian Highway Code (Codice della Strada), if your license was issued by a non-EU country, you must carry one of two things alongside your original physical license:
1. An International Driving Permit (IDP)
Before your departure, your local government’s nationally recognized automobile association can issue you an IDP, which is a document recognized by the Italian government. It is usually valid only for one year.

There are many online international websites and organizations, which are not legally recognized by your local government nor by the Italian government. If you pay them, they will happily provide you a quick legally worthless translation. Your rental car company may even accept one of these unlawful permits to drive even if it is bogus as the rental car company will not pay any fine if you drive; you will pay the fine.
2. An Italian Sworn Translation
Before your departure or upon arrival in Italy, a legal translator like me authorized by the Italian Ministry of Justice can make an Italian translation, swear and register it at a courthouse in Italy, thereby becoming an Italian sworn translation recognized by the Italian government, police, rental car and insurance companies.
Unlike in other countries, a driver license in Italy is not considered an identification card. You still should always carry your passport with you at all times.
What happens if you do not have one?
If you are caught by Italian police…
If you are caught by the Italian police without one of these, the “scenic route” can get expensive. Fines for driving without a proper Italian sworn translation or IDP generally range from €408 to over €1,600. In some cases, the police may even tow away and impound your vehicle on the spot, if you have no legal driver with you to drive the vehicle away.
If you have an accident…
If you are liable for the accident, the Italian insurance you have or have through your rental contract will not cover your damages. You will be fully personally responsible for any damages.
What about rental car companies…
Rental car companies will not, should not, rent you vehicles. Some rental companies are less well informed of the legal details and may accidentally accept a ‘scam’ translation such as an IDP from the internet. They may even unknowingly recommend them!
However, if the police stop you, you will pay the fine; not the rental car company.

Pro Tip: If you are already in Italy and realize you forgot your IDP, do not panic. You can hire an Italian legal translator like me to provide an Italian sworn translation (traduzione giurata). This involves the translator going to a courthouse in Italy to “swear” to the accuracy of the document and register it, making your driver license legally accepted in Italy until your original license expires.
What about a certified translation?
No, the Italian government does not recognize certified translations, only Italian sworn translations. Sworn translations are also called legalized.
If you use only a certified translator, it will cost you more, because the certified translator will then pass the translation to a legal translator to be sworn. I am both a certified translator and legal translator in one, and thereby more efficient in time and cost.
What if I get an IDP in Italy from the internet?
No, these internet based translations are not recognized by your local government, which issued the driving license, nor by the Italian government. Immediate online translations are not legal documents in Italy.

Driving in Italy is an art form. Beyond the paperwork, keep these 2026 essentials in mind:
The ZTL trap
Most historic city centers such as Como and Milan have a Limited Traffic Zone (Zona a Traffico Limitato). Entering these without a specific ZTL permit will result in an automated fine sent to your home months later.
The “Tutor” system
Italy uses the Tutor system on motorways (autostrada), which calculates your average speed between two points. Slowing down just for the camera will not save you!
ETIAS requirement
As of 2026, most non-EU citizens will need their ETIAS (European Travel Information and Authorization System) approval linked to their passport before entering the EU Schengen Zone.
